Conservation Initiatives in Tibet and the Eastern Himalaya

It is easy to talk about ecotourism and community development; it is another thing to actually practice it. High Asia continues to invest in the mountain communities living in and near the regions we guide in. Should you travel with us, you can be sure your money goes to the local people who shoulder the responsibility for the long term care of the Himalayan ecosystem.

1995-1997. CHINA/TIBET. High Asia assisted the government of Sichuan province in the design and location of nature reserves throughout Kham (western Sichuan). This resulted in Yading Nature Reserve which protects the sacred Konkaling Peaks.

2001. XINJIANG/TIBET. High Asia along with George Schaller of the Wildlife Conservation Society, located the birthing ground of the endangered Tibetan Antelope on the Xinjiang/Tibet border deep in the Kun Lun mountains. George has since negotiated an agreement with the Chinese government to create a new reserve in this ecologically sensitive area.

1998-Present. INDIA. High Asia continues to train local tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh, in all matters related to tourism. We are also working to establish a 5,000 sq km reserve in eastern Arunachal Pradesh

2002. BHUTAN. High Asia in conjunction with the Royal Government of Bhutan created new treks in eastern and central Bhutan which economically empower local communities of this area.

2003-Present. MYANMAR. High Asia is working in northern Myanmar's newly established Hkakborazi reserve and the Hukaung Valley reserve. In both regions we are designing treks and other forms of community based tourism that directly benefit Kachin people living in the region.
